Better Together Housing Newsletter October 2024

Hi everyone, welcome to our October 2024 edition

We have been meeting more and more women who are asking how do I know if I am ready for shared housing? Or how do I know if the person I am considering living with is actually the right match for me? To help answer these questions we are developing some tools and self-reflection surveys. We are currently trialing them in our Coffee Chats and Get it Togethers to gather feedback from our members.

These will be available to our members over the next few weeks. If you would like to make suggestions on tools that you think would be useful for shared housing please reach out to us at info@bettertogetherhousing.com.au

Have you heard our new ad?

Have you heard our new Radio ad on the Sunshine Coast? it shares information about our program and how it connects women of the age of 55 together to co-share housing.

It’s airing on both 91.1 Hot FM and Zinc 96 over the next few months, with the generous support of Zonta Club of Noosa and sponsors Noosa and Hinterland Family Lawyers – thank you so much for your ongoing support!

Mackay News & Updates

Update on our latest Get it
Together

Our October Get it Together session on the 10th was a wonderful mix of new and familiar faces, sparking some deep and meaningful discussions around the theme “What’s holding me back from sharing?”

We all know that shared housing can be complex—it requires self-reflection, honesty (both with ourselves and others), and trust. For many in our group, trust emerged as a key reason why women hesitate to share their living space. Like any relationship, trust is essential for success.

We continue to explore these feelings and thoughts together, and we hope these conversations help you make more confident decisions about your housing future and your ability to take that next step. These discussions can be powerful—and they just might change your life!

We look forward to seeing you at the next gathering in Mackay on the 14th of November at CQUniversity Mackay City Campus

Mackay Seniors Expo

We were at the Mackay’s Seniors Expo on the 15th of this month. We had 4 members help out on they day and helped BTH worker Lauren talk to others who were interested in finding our more about our Program.

Rental Security Subsidy Queensland

Have you heard of the Rental Security Subsidy?

The Rental Security Subsidy can help if you’re having trouble paying your rent or keeping a tenancy because of short-term financial challenges. If you’re eligible, the Queensland Government pays part of your rent directly to your landlord or property manager so you can stay in your current home or move to a new one.

Not poor enough, not rich
enough Older people falling through the housing assistance eligibility gap

New research was released yesterday exploring the
incidence of people aged 55 or older who are at risk of ‘non-supported housing
precarity,’ referred to in the report as the Missing Middle. This target group
includes older Australians who are ‘not poor enough’ to qualify for – or be in
receipt of – current housing assistance but ‘not wealthy enough’ to have
sufficient income or assets to secure housing, both now and as they age.
